How to Boulder
Bouldering is climbing short walls without a rope. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
- 1
What Is Bouldering?
Bouldering is a form of climbing performed on low walls (up to ~4 meters) without ropes. You climb over a crash pad that cushions your falls.
- 2
Start Position
Every boulder problem starts with both hands on the designated starting hold(s). Your feet can be placed on any hold from the route (same color/label).
- 3
Topping Out
A boulder is successfully completed when you hold the final (top) hold with both hands in a controlled, stable position.
- 4
Follow the Colors
Each boulder problem is marked with holds of the same color or with numbered tags. Only use the holds that belong to your route.
- 5
Falling Safely
When you fall, try to land on both feet with bent knees on the crash pad. Avoid reaching out with your hands to break a fall.
- 6
Improvise Your Own Route
The wall is full of holds — you don't have to stick to the marked problems. Pick any holds you like and create your own route. Use your imagination and skill to design challenges that match your level.
